A CALL TO ACTION!
The Siren’s Song
In today’s Herald Journal there is a letter to the editor which deserve a reply. This letter quotes heavily from Spence Kimball regarding our countries military spending. While I have no desire to engage in a theological debate, I do have something to say about the world we live in and human nature. We live in a world of opposites or duality. Or in the words of the bible and a popular song, to everything there is a season. We live in a world of good and evil. For things to remain in balance good must oppose evil. It is easy to hate violence and war. Both are disgusting things. No one is pro war! In other words all sane people are anti war. I have first hand/personal experience of it's terrible cost . My father was a WW II vet who suffered both physically and psychologically from his experiences in the Pacific theatre. I grew up as a player in his drama with the demons that inhabit us all, too some extent. As a youth I was very bothered by our war in Vietnam and was active in the antiwar movement. So I give no ground with those who claim the high ground morally regarding war. As I matured, I realized that there are those who wish to impose their will on others and to dominate all of our lives for their own gain. It is the nature of the world we live in.
If good does not oppose evil, then evil dominates. I have many Quaker friends who I love deeply. I do not share their view of pacifism though. Although it might seem irrelevant, gun control is a good case in point. If you want to insure greater violence and crime, forbid law abiding citizens from being able to defend themselves. Be it Washington DC, New York City, Great Britain or anywhere else where citizens are prevented from protecting themselves, crime flourishes. Most people are not aware that (according to the UN) Scotland/Whales lead the world in violent crime followed closely by Great Britain. Violent crime has risen greatly in both Australia and Canada and is much greater than the US. This rise can be directly traced to their draconian gun laws which make the work of criminals much safer.
Unfortunately, many among us prefer their emotional arguments to factual ones. They have some kind of irrational fear of firearms and no amount of logic or facts will dissuade them from their beliefs and fears. They truly believe that if we could only ban guns then violence would disappear. Liberals believe that all men and women are good at heart and that external factors cause criminal behavior. I refer the reader to a great interview conducted by Dennis Prater and a leading liberal professor. That can be found here: http://www.townhall.com/columnists/DennisPrager/2006/09/19/what_the_left_thinks_howard_zinn,_part_ii
This discussion is very revealing and worthy of your time. This type of thinking must be opposed because it is becoming more and more popular. I dare say that more women than men seem to hold the view that violence only breeds more violence. I suggest that unopposed, violence only grows. It has taken me many years and a world of experience to fully understand this dynamic. Many within the religion of Islam want to dominate the world and use the Koran for justification. The history of Islam is rife with violent domination of nations by the “religion of peace.” You only have to read their own words to understand this but this is something that many refuse to do. They prefer their own idealistic world where if only, we didn’t stand up to them then everything would be hunky dory. This is niavtivity at its worst. If you want evil to flourish then do nothing! And we all will be held accountable.
